If you start off early enough, you’ll be able to stop-off in Polatlı along the way, and from the train station there, take a taxi-tour to the Iron Age Phrygian capital of Gordion. Patara Beach itself is rimmed by the ruins of Ancient Patara, once one of Lycia’s major ports and birthplace of St. Nicholas (aka Santa Claus). Spend the night in the itsy village of Gelemiş which backs the beach and ruins.
